Kingsmead at Judo Borough Championships

I was very privileged to be able to watch  16 of our students compete in the Borough Judo Championships on Monday afternoon, at Highlands school. Our students where an absolute delight to watch and having not seen a great amount of Judo I was so impressed by their skills and knowledge. They have been training every Fridays after school- some for nearly 2 years, and many won medals in their weight category- Natalie Seoraj, Saffron Lee, Tshani Townsend, Dean Townsend, Jake Bennet, Jonathan  Elliot -all won Gold medals, and we got 4 silvers!

On the evening of March 3rd 2009, Kingsmead collected two of the three prizes allocated to the Youth sector at the Enfield Celebrating Sport Awards. The third award for the top disabled athlete was won by a student at West Lea School.

This is a highly prestigious award as candidates have to be nominated and therefore only the elite are in the running for the award.  A shortlist is then made and those candidates are called to interview and give a presentation in front of a panel.

The first of two students representing Kingsmead was Katy Eagling, who won the Young Leader Award for her work in Gymnastics: both in school and for her work in other schools and in Enfield Gym Club.

The other student was former sixth former Reece Beckford who won the Sports Performer of the Year: his work is also in Gymnastics where he has gained international honours.  Reece is currently training 28 hours a week in his bid for Olympic success in 2012.

Major congratulations to both of these students for these outstanding achievements which result from their dedication and commitment to sport.

Seven 6th Form students have been selected to represent Kingsmead in Enfield's first Leadership Academy.

The Academy is part of the Youth Sport Trust 'Step Into Sport' programme and is designed to provide high quality support and development for young leaders and volunteers.

The first session was held at Middlesex University, Trent Park and involved on-line training and developing a log book of volunteering.  Further sessions will be held at a variety of locations with students gaining a coaching qualification in their chosen sport.

The students will also participate in Child Protection training and career development.  The students representing Kingsmead are:  Katy Eagling, Hannah Rason, Calum Hunt, Adnan Harun, Jonathan Pitcher, Gary Herbertson and Charlie Walters.
