In March 2011, we began an exciting project to turn a patch
of land behind into a vegetable garden. Led by Mr Sohoye a small group of
volunteers from Year 7-9 have dug some ground, and planted potatoes, carrots,
onions, garlic and tomatoes. It is early days for the garden, but they are all
growing nicely, and there are plans to plant more, and increase the size of the
plot.
We see this as a great opportunity to educate students in
where food comes from, and for them to get some first hand experience of
growing good, organic food. We hope to use the garden to involve food
technology as the project expands, and use the expertise of the MGT students to
build us a composter to help provide nutrients for the soil, and to use all the
plant waste generated around the school.
