COURSE CONTENT/DESCRIPTION

Students develop a range of skills for calculating including mental methods, ‘pencil and paper’ techniques and using calculators/computers.

The course is arranged in termly units. These are:

Term 1

· using letters in algebra, +, x,    , -, integers, areas and perimeters, equivalent fractions, calculate simple percentages, simple probability, simple angle theory.

Term 2

· converting metric units, co-ordinates and line graphs, constructing angles and triangles, representing data, simple surveys, percentages, decimals, fractions, making expressions in algebra.

Term 3

· revise number skills; simplify linear expressions, plotting graphs, ratios, plans and elevations, constructing frequency diagrams.

The ability to use and apply mathematics is developed through investigation projects (at least one each term).  Students are tested at the end of each term and given an appropriate SAT level.

End of term tests are given which consist of (i) Non Calculator (ii) Calculator (iii) Mental Test.
