Mrs Young writes ...
The angel was designed by ex-Kingsmead student Billie-Maria Achillios-Whitbread for her A Level Art. She went on to study fine art at St Martin’s School of Art (London University). The angel was too big for Billie-Marie’s house but she had spent so much time on it she did not want to throw it out, so we displayed it – with lots of help from the caretaker – a bit of team work!
We use the angel as a symbol of achievement – seeing our students as “High Flyers” who can achieve whatever dreams they have. The original wings fell apart, for the material they were made of was rather delicate – so at the Performing and Visual Arts Day, some of our current Year 13 students redesigned the wings and painted it black and gold – to add “richness” to its appearance – because all of our students are not only stars, they are also caring world citizens who see looking after those who are vulnerable as all our responsibilities – hence their sterling efforts at charity fund raising – they raised over £1400 for charity.
