Students who have studied Textiles or Art & Design at GCSE will build on, and develop, their strong artistic skills. Students are encouraged to work independently and take responsibility for their creativity through a series of workshop style lessons where they are introduced to new techniques.
How will I be examined?
Assessment in Textile Design is through a portfolio and an externally-set assessment. Full Exam Specification here

In More Detail: AS level

Portfolio |
Students develop a coursework ‘Portfolio’ exemplifying work carried out during the AS course. Students begin by making observational studies. Experiments with different media like paints, charcoal, collage, inks etc are produced and developed into designs. A personal final piece is produced based on the experiments, which could be a hanging, a printed length, a furnishing object etc. There is also a mini project based on ‘The Body Beautiful’. All work produced for this unit is marked as a whole. |

Exam |
An assignment set by the exam board. There will be a question paper for Textiles containing five exciting starting points. Students choose one and complete the preparation work in a sketchbook. There are 5 hours of supervised study where students develop their work and then a final piece is produced towards the end of the exam period. |

Portfolio |
A personal investigation in which work is developed in response to an idea, issue, concept or theme of the student's choice (usually it will be a technique or art movement that was of interest during the AS year). The practical work is supported by a written element of no less than 1000 words and no more than 3000 words, leading to a finished piece or pieces.
Final outcomes from this unit may include the following:

Exam |
At the start of February, students will complete an assignment set by the exam board. There will be a question paper for Textiles containing eight exciting starting points. Students choose one and complete the preparation work in a sketchbook. The final piece will be produced in controlled conditions in the Textiles room.
