MGT

In MGT we offer students the opportunity to use their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills to design and make purposeful, innovative products using a variety of different processes and materials.

Students will make use of workshops where they develop practical skills using a variety of tools and equipment in a safe, purposeful learning environment. They will also be taught traditional and CAD (Computer Aided Design) based visualisation skills, with access to computer suites making use of industry standard design software.

We aim to engage pupils in the design process and develop skills and understanding that may lead to future higher education study or employment in a design discipline of their choice.

KEY STAGE 3

At KS3 students learn the iterative design process and develop quality design and making skills using a variety of materials including paper/card, wood, metal and plastics. These skills are developed through bespoke projects that cover specific curriculum content. students are taught to identify market needs and opportunities for new solutions to existing design problems, with an emphasis on the creative application of their knowledge and understanding

KEY STAGE 4

At KS4 students extend their learning, making advanced use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and traditional graphical techniques to enhance their ideas. They are encouraged to think critically and employ skills of analysis and iteration to develop their understanding of the design process and produce quality outcomes in GCSE Design & Technology.

On this course, students are assessed in three components - The Iterative Design Challenge (50% of total grade), Principles of Product Design written exam (26.7% of total grade) and Problem Solving in Product Design (23.3% of total grade).

KEY STAGE 5

At KS5 students can continue their design education in the study of A Level Design & Technology. Here pupils engage in more in-depth learning in design disciplines that can lead to opportunities for higher education study or careers in the design industry.

Students strengthen their critical thinking and problem solving skills to develop ideas and prototypes that solve real world problems, considering the needs, wants and aspirations of potential users.

On this course students are assessed in three components - The Iterative Design Challenge (50% of total grade), Principles of Product Design written exam (26.7% of total grade) and Problem Solving in Product Design (23.3% of total grade).
