The experience of learning and communicating in a language other than English makes a unique contribution to the curriculum. The study of a foreign language removes pupils from their familiar environment and affords them the opportunity of exploring the cultures of other nations through the medium of the foreign language.

The belief that English is spoken everywhere and by everybody is a myth. In the job market knowledge of a foreign language has never been as necessary as it is now. Few companies exist in isolation; most trade with European or world partners. In business, knowledge of at least one other major world language is essential.

Knowledge of a foreign language is also a recreational tool. On holiday it affords freedom – freedom to leave behind the tour company rep and explore the country independently and with confidence. Language opens doors, which, otherwise, would remain firmly shut.

In school the skills taught in a MFL classroom make an important contribution to learning generally. They develop the student's awareness of sound and rhythm. They teach the student to listen for gist and detail. They develop the student's communication skills, teaching the need for accuracy, concision and co-operation in reaching an understanding. They develop the student's comprehension of grammar and the mechanisms of language. Importantly, the study of the language introduces the student to fresh ideas and images, broadening his/her cultural awareness. In fostering sympathetic attitudes towards other cultures, language learning promotes goodwill, destroys stereotypes and counters prejudice.

The specific aims of this department are:

  • to deliver the National Curriculum.
  • to develop the linguistic skills which will prepare students either for further study post-16, for the world of work or for recreational travel abroad.
  • to employ a variety of teaching styles to promote effective language learning.
  • to develop effective study skills.
  • to offer insights into the culture of the target-language.
  • to promote positive attitudes and a sympathetic approach to speakers of other languages and to their cultures.

In delivering all of the above, we aim to provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation for all our students.
