The dance department at Kingsmead aims to develop the student’s confidence and skills in choreography, performance and dance appreciation through the study of a range of genres, styles and approaches to dance. The emphasis is on broadening and enriching the experiences and opportunities for students both within lessons and as part of the extra-curricular programme. We provide a positive yet challenging and inspirational environment for students to share work and develop personal and social skills.

Separate clubs run for KS3, KS4/5 and on an annual basis we showcase the work produced at The Enfield Schools Dance Festival as well as Kingsmeads Dance and Drama Evening. In recent years we have been fortunate to be involved in projects with both The Royal Opera House and Rambert Dance Company which proved to be wonderful experiences for both students and staff and really demonstrated the passion, enthusiasm and talent Kingsmead.


All students in key stage 3 will study dance as part of the Physical Education curriculum where they will have two lessons a week for five weeks. The schemes of work in Dance allow students to explore movement in a fun and challenging way, providing the opportunity to work both collaboratively and independently and engage in teacher, peer and self-evaluation. Students will develop knowledge and understanding in performing, choreographing and appreciation, building a great foundation for those wishing to further their studies in dance at GCSE.

Year 7

Introduction to Dance Choreography
• Performance and Choreography: Body actions and motif development
• Contact work: ‘Delicate’ by Motionhouse Dance Company

Year 8

Performance Duet: Taught duet to develop technical, physical and expressive performance skills.



Students will have three lessons a week (2x practical, 1x theory) although there are exceptions in the lead up to exams. Home learning is set on a weekly basis and aims to prepare consolidate or enrich student’s knowledge, understanding and confidence in dance.

The course is made up of the two components below:

Component 1: Performance and Choreography

Students will be taught two set phrases and a duet/trio. They will then be assessed on their performance of these pieces.

Students will be assessed on their ability to choreograph a solo of group dance that clearly relates to the choreographic intention.

How is it assessed?



Both are internally marked and externally moderated by the exam board.

Component 2: Dance Appreciation

Students will complete a written exam which is in three parts based upon their knowledge of the anthology of six dance works.

How is it assessed?

This will be externally marked.



A-level Dance is a dynamic qualification which encourages students to develop their creative and intellectual capacity, alongside transferable skills such as team working, communication and problem solving. All of these are sought after skills by higher education and employers and will help them stand out in the workplace whatever their choice of career.

This specification reflects both historical and current dance practices, making it more relevant, and inspires a lifelong passion and appreciation for dance. During the two year course students will build upon skills developed during GCSE Dance in performance, choreography and dance appreciation.

The course is made of the two components below:

Component 1: Performance and Choreography

Students take part in two performance pieces that will be assessed on the external exam day.

Students will have to research and create a group choreography based upon a selected question /stimuli set by the exam board. (40 marks)

How it's assessed

This component is marked by an external assessor from AQA during a visit to school. Visits will normally take place between March and May.
