At Kingsmead, Literacy is at the centre of everything we do… We believe it is every teacher’s responsibility to raise and elevate the Literacy of all our students.
We provide all students from year 7 to 12 with a weekly Literacy activity delivered in the tutorial period. These activities range from punctuation work to vocabulary challenge and ‘real life’ Literacy for our KS5 students. They are revisited and adapted on a half-termly basis to meet the needs of our students.
To promote and encourage reading for pleasure, students in years 7, 8 and 9 use the Accelerated Reader programme, which has been proven successful in improving our students’ reading age. Students complete a Star Reader test three times a year to monitor their reading progress and development. We celebrate reading for pleasure with Drop Everything And Read days three times a year.
In subject areas, teachers use the agreed and school-wide Literacy codes when marking students’ work. Literacy errors are corrected and addressed in RRD lessons.
Literacy has an extra-curriculum presence on Teams with our Literacy Headquarters. Students can access activities, book reviews and our Word of the Week.
We now have a Virtual KS3 Book Club and we are launching a Virtual Writing Club after Easter.
