Dear Parent / Carer,
Developing literacy and reading ability is fundamental to a pupil's ability to access the curriculum in secondary school.
At Kingsmead School, we wish to re-assess all our students’ reading age to check what their needs are being met and how we can continue to best help them learn and achieve. As part of this process, we will be re-administering the New Group Reading Test to all our students in Years 7 to 10 during Drop Down Day on Thursday 26th January 2023.
The New Group Reading Test (NGRT) is the same test they completed in November. It is a standardised, termly assessment that reliably measures reading skills against the national average. NGRT is in two parts: sentence completion (which measures decoding) and passage comprehension.
The assessment is adaptive - questions are automatically presented based on a pupil’s ability as they complete them, so more able pupils can be challenged while weaker readers are kept engaged.
No preparation is necessary; it is important that your child does not become anxious. At the same time, it is very important that students put their best effort into completing the tests so we can get reliable data on their reading ability. I thank you in advance for talking to your child about the importance of this test.
Once the tests have been administered, we will be in touch again with our plans, if any, for further follow-up intervention.
Regards,
Mrs A. Bradley
Literacy Coordinator
