Kingsmead school offers a wide variety of enrichment activities throughout the school year. Our aim is to ensure every student has the opportunity to engage in an extra-curricular club, volunteering and charity work, and off-site residential trips.
We also have a number of different educational opportunities for students of all years to visit Universities and other educational establishments. We want to prepare students for life and to equip them to access the opportunities it offers. So, just as importantly, we want Kingsmead students to display and develop the following personal values:
COURAGE: Aiming beyond our comfort zone, facing difficult challenges and doing things the right way, not just the quick way
NURTURE: Believing everybody gets better by taking one step at a time and that it is our responsibility to find ways to help each other to do that
COLLABORATION: Believing that working together lightens any burden and opens us to new ways of thinking
RIGOUR: Thinking things through and working hard to ensure that we are delivering on the right things all of the time
Wellbeing & Mindfulness
Wellbeing and the idea of maintaining a state of ‘wellness’ has been around for centuries in its various forms. In modern times, it is often described as simply feeling good.
Wellbeing can be linked to a number of different benefits including improved physical and mental health, faster recovery times from illness, higher educational attainment, greater productivity and an overall healthier lifestyle.
Mindfulness can help us enjoy life more and understand ourselves better. It's easy to stop noticing the world around us. It's also easy to lose touch with the way our bodies are feeling and to end up living 'in our heads' – caught up in our thoughts without stopping to notice how those thoughts are driving our emotions and behaviour.
To find out more about Wellbeing & Mindfulness, students can visit the VLE (under 'Enrichment') to find exercises, videos, website links, popular Apps and more to help them build a comprehensive toolkit to help them through times of stress and anxiety. We also have an information board, books and leaflets available to take away from the library.
We have a staff member who is 'Trained to Teach' the .b mindfulness curriculum by the 'Mindfulness in Schools Project' (MISP) https://mindfulnessinschools.org/
All year 7 students have now be introduced to Mindfulness and Year 7 form groups are on a rota to receive a short guided practise in their Friday am registration session.
We also run a Wednesday lunchtime Mindfulness club available to year 7 students who would like to learn more about mindfulness techniques and join in with guided practise.
