Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you and everyone you know are well and able to support one another in these extraordinary times.

Further to yesterday’s Government announcement, Kingsmead’s school site will be closed on Friday 20th March, and will remain closed until further notice to all but the children the government has specified.

We cannot safely open to any substantial number of students with the current number of staff absent. I must say that I am relieved to have this decision made. While I think the effort to continue as long as possible has been worthy, it has caused lots of concern for everyone in the school community. It has also put a huge extra load on a number of key staff who have gone well beyond what would be expected. I must publicly thank all of my colleagues for coming to work during this time and demonstrating yet again that Kingsmead is made by its people. My thanks also to you for trusting us with your child.

Arrangements for tomorrow Friday 20th March 2020

Kingsmead School will be closed to all students, apart from:

  • Students whose parents are ‘key workers’
  • Our most vulnerable students
  • Those students that have an Education Health Care Plan

For those who are our most vulnerable students and those with EHCPs we will be in touch directly later today.

We will open from 8:30am – 3:30pm. Students are to enter site via the pedestrian turnstile gates, not the cinema gate. We will provide students with a free meal at break and lunch.

Children of Key Workers

As of today, we are waiting for a list of which jobs are considered ‘key’ by the government. We will do everything we can to make sure we are supporting our society and community in being able to respond effectively to COVID-19.

If you believe you will need us to care for your child due to your role, please respond to this survey ( before 7pm this evening.

Free School Meals

If you are currently entitled to free school meals and require financial support until the Government FSM Voucher Scheme is up and running, please contact

Once we know more about the voucher scheme, we will share this with you.

Arrangements for next week and beyond

I am currently in conversation with Enfield Council and other Headteachers to try to shape what our local response will look like. Please be aware that it may be that those Kingsmead students we care for are sent to another school temporarily, or that Kingsmead becomes a site for children from other schools.

The word used in briefings has been ‘care’ rather than schooling or education. So, I expect we will be providing supervision and catering for students while they complete learning in a similar fashion to their peers.

Learning at Home

While the school site is physically closed to most children, Kingsmead school staff are still very much working. We commit our working lives to making sure that every child gets the education they deserve. This will not change.

Over the coming weeks, teachers will be sending messages to their classes via our virtual learning environment and responding to students’ queries, via their school email address. They will be expecting students to complete the learning that they have been set via our virtual learning environment. Teachers may be asking for the work done to be sent to them, in which case they will respond to it.

Please go to to access the learning we have made available.

We will give you more detail via a weekly bulletin to all parents via text/ email. These bulletins will also be loaded on to the school website.

If you are unable to access resources online, or if your child has forgotten their password, then please contact us at

Exam Students

For those with exams this summer, we currently know no more than anyone else as to what the plan is. I am sorry about this, I wish I could provide more reassurance, but I will ensure you are informed as soon as we are.

We anticipate direction from the Government tomorrow.

Year 10 students, I will be pushing hard to find a way to allow you to take your exams in your option subjects as early as possible.

All trips up to 31st May 2020 will be cancelled and a full refund will be made to parents. If you believe you are due a refund but haven’t received one by the end of the next week, please contact

We will reopen fully as soon as is sensible and in keeping with government advice, but it will remain dependent on the number of adults available to run the school safely and effectively. I will update you further as soon as I can.

Email will be the simplest way of making sure that we are able to get back to you, so if you have any further questions then please do contact us at
