At Kingsmead, the health and safety of our students is of paramount importance. Parents send their children to school each day with the expectation that we provide a secure environment in which their children can flourish. Kingsmead therefore must ensure that this expectation becomes reality. This is safeguarding.

Kingsmead has designated safeguarding lead officers (DSLs) in school trained to respond to safeguarding concerns raised by staff, students or parents. All Kingsmead staff are also trained to be aware of signs that students may be at risk and to follow this up appropriately. In addition to our responsibility for the health and safety of those on site, the school is proactive in educating students about safeguarding risks in the community and works closely with other agencies including Social Services, CAMHS, the Police and several charities.

The school will, in most circumstances, endeavour to discuss all safeguarding concerns with parents about their children. There may be exceptional circumstances, however, when the school will discuss concerns with Social Services and/or the police without parental knowledge (in accordance with Child Protection procedures). The school's Safeguarding and Child Protection policies are available to view and download in the School Policies section of this website.

Kingsmead serves a diverse community including some areas with multiple indices of deprivation. We are mindful of our local context for safeguarding and our duty to educate students about the wider safeguarding picture. For this reason we regularly invite speakers to school and hold special assemblies and events on safeguarding issues affecting our local area, even if they are not apparent in school. This year we have invited speakers to talk about knife crime, County lines gangs and FGM for example.
