What is SMSC?
Spiritual, moral, social, cultural (SMSC) education helps all students to develop essential qualities which will prepare them for life in modern Britain and in society as a whole. The ability to show respect for diversity and to act in an honest, moral, principled way demonstrating self-respect, independence and a reflective nature helps to prepare them for their future.
We believe that with effort, perseverance and motivation, all students will succeed: intelligence is not fixed and there is no ceiling to learning. We strive to foster growth mind-sets in our students through engaging, meaningful and challenging learning tasks. Consistency of practice, high expectations and outstanding teaching and learning are at the heart of Kingsmead. We work with all members of our community to provide the support and range of experiences that will inspire and enable our students to Dream, Believe, Achieve.
Spiritual development: beliefs, religious or otherwise, which help students develop personal values and beliefs that inform their perspective on life along with an understanding and acceptance that others may have different beliefs. To experience a sense of awe and wonder and develop a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them. The ability to empathise with human emotions and feelings. Use of creativity and imagination in their learning with an ability to reflect on their experiences.
Moral development: an ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and apply it to their own lives with an ability to understand the consequences of their own actions. Understanding and investigating moral values and ethical issues with an ability to understand the viewpoint of others. Respect the civil and criminal law of England.
Social development: use social skills to collaborate and socialise with students from different social, religious and ethnic backgrounds. An ability to participate and co-operate in diverse groups with an ability to resolve conflicts. An interest in, and understanding of, the way communities and societies function at different levels.
Cultural development: an ability to explore, understand and respect diversity. Participate in and respect cultural activities showing an appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage. Understand, accept and respect diversity in preparation for life in modern Britain.
